Trail of the Khmer

Trek back in time on the trails of the ancient Khmer on a journey through Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. This exciting adventure presents the very best that the region has to offer including the awe-inspiring ruins of Angkor, vibrant cities, remote villages and mighty waterways. Try tubing down the river in Vang Vieng, thumbing down a tuk-tuk in Bangkok, knocking back a jigger of local firewater on Dong Khong Island or haggling at a market in Phnom Penh - colour, culture and adventure, this trip has it all.

Itinerary

Day 1 Bangkok

Take to the streets on a tuk-tuk or to the Chao Phraya River in a water taxi for an introduction to Bangkok city life.

Days 2-4 Siem Reap/Angkor Wat

Elaborate temples and awe-inspiring architecture are next on the agenda. A visit to the mysterious Ta Prohm is a must, as is seeing a remarkable Angkor sunset.

Days 5-6 Phnom Penh

Stop by S-21, now a museum filled with haunting prisoner photos and horrible intruments of torture, before a sobering visit to the Killing Fields of Choeng Ek.

Day 7 Kratie

Try some fried spiders in Skuon en route to Kratie, home of rare Irrawaddy dolphins.

Days 8-9 Don Khong Island

Take a slow boat up the Mekong and stop for the night on the island famed for brewing Laos' finest firewater - lao-lao.

Day 10 Tad Fane

Make for a mountain hideaway where there's time to explore nearby hilltribe villages, marvel at the jade green scenery or trek to spectacular waterfalls.

Days 11-12 Vang Vieng

Nestled amid dramatic limestone mountains studded with mysterious caves, Vang Vieng is a spelunker's dream. The adventurous may like to test their rock climbing prowess on limestone walls, otherwise enjoy a walk along the river bank to watch the fishermen in their pole boats.

Days 13-15 Luang Prabang

Hop into a jumbo, Laos' version of a tuk-tuk, and head to the fabulous Kuang Si Falls for an invigorating afternoon dip.

Days 16-17 Vientiane

Scour the morning market for souvenirs, wander the gilded Pha That Luang or simply kick back with a Beer Lao in one of the many riverside stilt restaurants.

Day 18 Bangkok

The journey comes full circle on return to the bright lights of Bangkok.
