Itinerary

Days 1-2 Chiang Mai

Whether lingering at glittering temples, slurping on a spicy curry or haggling over handicrafts, Chiang Mai offers a treasure trove of unique sights and activities to satisfy any traveller. Call into the famous Night Bazaar or visit Wat Phra Singh to admire its unique Lanna architecture. Enjoy a tasty northern Thai dinner accompanied by traditional dances and hilltribe shows performed by local tribespeople. Rise early to visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep spectacularly located on a mountain top overlooking the city.

Day 3 Chiang Rai

Stop in at an elephant camp to watch these gentle giants take their morning bath, before climbing onto one's back for a ride through the surrounding forest. Browse the local market, then set sail down the meandering Mae Kok River, taking in the jade countryside and passing traditional villages. Soak up Chiang Rai's relaxed atmosphere and perhaps pay a visit to the sparkling white Wat Rong Khun.

Days 4-5 Golden Triangle/Chiang Mai

Visit where the borders of Thailand, Burma and Laos converge at the infamous Golden Triangle overlooking the Mekong River. Visit an Akha hilltribe village and the old city of Chiang Saen before heading to Mae Sai near the Burmese border. Admire the Burmese lacquerware, gems and jade for sale before taking the steps up the hill for a view across the border. Back in Chiang Mai there's plenty of time to relax or pick up some last-minute bargains.
