Dordogne - 8 Day Self Guided Walk
The fertility of the land and the number of rivers has made the Dordogne valley a favoured home for mankind for thousands of years. A history of struggle and conflict has left its mark on the architecture of the region - the landscape is dotted with fortified castles, while luxurious chateaux are noticeably absent. The depth of the gorges matches the height of the rocky crags and your route through this beautiful region takes you past some of the most spectacular scenery in France. Take an adventure with the sun on your back and the wind in your hair and feel free to lose yourself in the provincial landscapes and medieval villages.
Itinerary
Days 1-2 St Cere to Loubressac
The bustling market town of St Cere on the banks of the River Bave is full of character. With two medieval towers dominating the skyline and wooden houses dating from the 15th century, it is truly one of France's hidden gems. Stroll around town to prepare for the adventure ahead, and then enjoy the magnificent views over the Gorge d'Autoire on the way to Loubressac.Day 3 Loubressac to Carennac
Take an optional longer route via Gouffre de Padirac or simply head directly down river to Carennac. Overhanging the Cere and Bave rivers, this medieval town is awash with beautiful buildings and magical views over the St Cere Valley.Days 4-5 Carennac to Martel
Cross the river Dordogne and enter Martel, the medieval town of seven towers. Stroll the narrow cobbled streets with their fascinating old doorways and mullioned windows. Take a day to relax and rest tired legs, ride the local Truffadou steam train or enjoy an optional walk to Mont Mercou.Day 6 Martel to Meyronne
Walk across the rolling hills of the Causse de Gramat, through woods and past farmlands to the tiny riverside village of Meyronne. Take to the streets to see the beautiful old houses that are typical of the region.Days 7-8 Meyronne to Rocamadour
Enjoy the final day's walk to Rocamadour. The terrain today is diverse and colourful, from thickly wooded forests, to open meadows, to stunning views of the valleys and hills. The sudden view of the Rocamadour houses that cling to the edge of a huge cliff is breathtaking. The terraces that hold up the stone buildings here are shrouded in shadow at night, making it seem as if the houses are suspended in air.
