Cinque Terre -5 Day Self Guided Walk
The Cinque Terre is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, an area famed for the beauty of its coastline, its picturesque villages, and its ancient systems of footpaths that, before the advent of the railway, were the towns' only link to the outside world. This coastal route is one of the most amazing in Europe, with its dramatically terraced hills and sparkling azure seas, and there's no better way to experience it than on this invigorating ramble from town to town.
Itinerary
Days 1-2 Monterosso to Riomaggiore
The famous coastal path of the Cinque Terre offers breathtaking panoramas of the coast and the colourful painted houses that make up the 'five lands'. From cliffs high above the sea, the views are endless, encompassing the whole of the Cinque Terre. The area is also adored for its scrumptious fresh produce, including fish and seafood from the Mediterranean and exquisite wines, olives and basil from the hillsides. Be sure to try the local speciality, pesto, for a true flavour sensation.Day 3 Riomaggiore
Hiking on the ridge above the coast, follow the path that unites the five sanctuaries that for centuries have kept watch over the villages and the inhabitants of the Cinque Terre. This is an unusual and evocative hike, which combines beautiful scenery with the opportunity to delve more deeply into the history of the area.Days 4-5 Riomaggiore to Portovenere
Walk up through the steeply terraced vineyards and olive groves that characterise the Cinque Terre, exchanging the popular coastal villages for sleepy inland settlements perched precariously on the hillsides. Take time to soak up the incredible panoramas before following the trail down to picturesque Portovenere.
