Northern Highlights

Explore the fascinating culture and beauty of New Zealand's North Island. Travel through the land of 'Lord of the Rings' and visit volcanic plateaus and thermal hotspots, limestone caves and wildlife havens, lush vineyards and pristine bays. Quaff New Zealand's best wines, hang out in the modern cities of Auckland and Wellington and experience Maori culture over a hangi dinner and a marae overnight stay.

Itinerary

Day 1 Auckland

Admire stunning views over Auckland from atop an extinct volcano.

Day 2 Coromandel Peninsula

Walk or kayak to the spectacular limestone arch at Cathedral Cove. Explore the former Maori 'pa' (fortified village) of Te Pare Point amid volcanic hills and lush kauri forest, and dig your own thermal pool in the steaming sands of Hot Water Beach.

Day 3 Lake Rotoiti/Rotorua

Experience warm hospitality overnight on a traditional 'marae' on the shores of Lake Rotoiti. Enjoy a traditional 'hangi' feast while learning about Maori culture. Rotorua's exploding geysers, bubbling mud pools and volcanic cliffs are shaped by seismic forces.

Days 4-5 Tongariro National Park

Wander an eerie landscape of snowfields, volcanoes, crater lakes and New Zealand's only desert. The park gained worldwide fame as Mordor in 'Lord of the Rings', though it also inspired plenty of local legends. The still active volcano Tongariro is so sacred that all but the highest-born Maori would shield their eyes against its grandeur. Adventurous sorts can tackle the 19.4km Tongariro Alpine Crossing: one of the world's finest day walks.

Days 6-7 Napier

Work up an appetite cycling through the wineries and orchards of Hawkes Bay. Back in Napier, explore the city's art deco heritage, which dates to the rebuilding of the town after a devastating 1931 earthquake.

Days 8-9 Wellington

Delve into New Zealand's rich heritage at Te Papa Museum or ride a cable car to the Botanic Gardens, taking in spectacular views of the city and harbour along the way.

Day 10 Marlborough Sounds

Renowned for its gorgeous inlets and coves, Marlborough Sounds is bursting with waterways and bush walking tracks that just beg to be explored. It's also possible to fit in a spot of fishing.

Days 11-12 Kaikoura

Teeming with marine life, Kaikoura is an animal enthusiast's dream. Keep your eyes peeled for sperm whales, dolphins, fur seals and wandering albatrosses.

Days 13-14 Christchurch

Soak up Christchurch's charming English atmosphere, perhaps picnicking by the River Avon or catching a tram past heritage buildings. Check out the Gothic architecture, Maori carvings and local arts and crafts at the Arts Centre.
