Days 1-2 St Petersburg
With free time, get lost in the long corridors of the magnificent Hermitage Museum. Gobble a bliny then discover the ghosts of Russian history on a walk past the city's palaces, cathedrals and parks.Days 3-4 Novgorod
With a history stretching back over 1,000 years, Novgorod is often seen as the cradle of modern Russian civilisation. Boasting graceful ruins and engrossing museums, the town's riverside kremlin provides an insight into the nation's grand and turbulent past.Days 5-6 Moscow
Marvel at the mighty heart of Russia with a visit to the Kremlin's grand halls that contain impressive imperial treasures. Enjoy a free afternoon exploring the bustling capital, and be sure to grab a filling plate of pelmeni before a visit to the ornate and colourful St Basil's Cathedral.Days 7-8 Kyiv
Known as the 'mother of Slavic cities', Kyiv has plenty to offer from both the nation's lavish past and its new trappings of independence. Roam the cobbled streets through the pastoral centre and gain valuable insight into the Ukraine's tragic history with a visit to the Chernobyl Museum.Days 9-10 Carpathian Mountains
Stay with a local family and join in with the cooking of Ukrainian delicacies. Peruse exquisite folk art including pisanki - eggs decorated with elaborate designs dating back to pre-Christian times. Located near the borders of Romania, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, the Carpathians hold an eclectic mix of Eastern European cultures. Since Communism collapsed, Budapest has experienced a renaissance. The grand architecture and boulevards are an outdoor museum of history, while glamorous boutiques and restaurants make this one of the finest capitals in Europe. Take to the city streets by bicycle to see it all for yourself.
