Kenyan Tribal Encounter

This dazzling East African journey combines all the region's most unforgettable experiences. Seek the rare mountain gorilla in Rwanda's steamy forests, enjoy thrill-packed safaris through lush forest and open savannah, gaze upon Mt Kilimanjaro's iconic snow-capped summit and the crashing waters of Victoria Falls sparkling with spray. Be welcomed into the hillside villages of Tanzania and Malawi, and relax on sandy beaches in Lake Malawi and Zanzibar. This overland adventure is a great way to discover what makes this part of the world so special.

Itinerary

Days 1-2 Livingstone/Victoria Falls

Kick off this adventure in Zambia's adventure capital. Tackle thrill-packed activities on and around the swirling Zambezi, and admire the roar of the Victoria Falls.

Days 3-4 Lusaka/Chipata

Journey to Zambia's busy capital, Lusaka, then enter Malawi, reputedly one of Africa's most welcoming countries.

Day 5 Luwawa Forest Lodge

Enjoy secluded walking, fishing and cycling in the lush Luwawa Forest. Meet the friendly locals on a village visit.

Days 6-7 Lake Malawi

Head to the less populated beaches, where water sports are on offer for the energetic. Relaxing on sandy shores is another pleasant option.

Days 8-9 Chitimba/Iringa

Forge through green highlands to pitch camp in the grounds of a Tanzanian farmhouse.

Days 10-11 Dar es Salaam

Cross Mikumi National Park, spotting elephants, buffaloes and giraffes, then camp on a tropical beach outside Dar es Salaam.

Days 12-15 Zanzibar/Dar es Salaam

Plunge into the delights of Zanzibar - explore historic Stone Town, tour fragrant spice plantations, sample tropical fruits and lounge under coconut palms beside the Indian Ocean.

Days 16-17 Usambara Mountains

Gaze on the refreshingly green Usambara Mountains. Ramble through the forests enjoying wonderful views and local hospitality.

Day 18 Marangu

Camp on Kilimanjaro's slopes, where the Chagga people farm coffee, bananas and grains. Join the locals for a hearty lunch of fresh produce. From nearby waterfalls, admire the sweeping plains below.

Days 19-20 Mto Wa Mbu/Karatu

Wake early to see Kilimanjaro rising above the plains. Meet inspirational kids at the Amani Children's Home, then stretch your legs - and perhaps haggle for souvenirs - in Mto Wa Mbu's marketplace. Next day, tour the village for a glimpse of local life.

Days 21-22 Serengeti National Park

Admire this sprawling savannah, home to some of Africa's best game viewing. Safe at camp in the evenings, listen out for animal calls.

Day 23 Ngorongoro Crater/Karatu

Descend into the famous volcanic crater. Spot animals and discover why Ngorongoro is sometimes called Africa's Eden.

Day 24 Nairobi

The adventure ends amid the bustle of Nairobi, East Africa's biggest city.

Day 25 Lake Nakuru

Meet local children and their families at the Kariandusi School, which helps disadvantaged rural kids stay in school. Lend a hand with a learning or construction project. Head to Lake Nakuru National Park, an idyllic spot where animals gather to drink at the flamingo-flocked lake.

Days 26-27 Eldoret/Kampala

Rise early for a dawn safari by the lake and perhaps spot an endangered rhino. Forge through beautiful highland country to Eldoret. Next day, cross the border into Uganda to camp in gorgeous surroundings near Jinja.

Days 28-29 Kibale Forest National Park

Hike through the park's hilly jungle for a delightful experience: watching the resident chimpanzees squabbling, playing in fruit trees and caring for their young. There are 11 other primate species to spot here, too. Wander through the surrounding tea plantations to see villages, rivers and lakes, or simply kick back at camp in the grounds, and take in the peaceful mountain views.

Day 30 Queen Elizabeth National Park

Embark on game drives to try and spot elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes and antelopes. Cruise the Kazinga Channel between Lake Edward and Lake George, where pelicans and fish-eagles soar and hippos wallow.

Day 31 Lake Bunyoni

Hiring a traditional dugout canoe and gliding across the lake's surface is a fun way to enjoy some of Uganda's most amazing scenery.

Days 32-34 Gorilla Trek

In the mist-shrouded hills of Rwanda's green heart, a very special experience awaits. Accompanied by a guide and trackers, hike through rugged terrain to come face-to-face with a family of rare mountain gorillas. The sight of these gentle mountain giants is unforgettable. When not tracking gorillas, explore the steamy rainforest and glimpse its other animal inhabitants.

Day 35 Lake Mburo

These acacia woodlands shelter leopards, jackals, hyenas and dozens of antelope species. Nearby, hippos and crocodiles cruise the papyrus-fringed lake. Discover some magnificent animals on walking safaris through this secluded park.

Days 36-37 Jinja

Visit Bujagali Falls and perhaps try whitewater rafting on the Nile's frothing waters. There's also time to browse for last-minute souvenirs.

Days 38-39 Eldoret/Nairobi

Passing through Eldoret once more, perhaps snack on some of the town's famous cheeses on the way back to Nairobi, where the adventure ends.
