Island Peak
One of the greatest ways to see the world?s highest mountains is from the summit of your own recently conquered peak. Imagine taking in views of Lhotse and Makalu and other Himalayan giants stretching to the horizon in hazy shades of black granite and flawless white and deep blue. Imja Tse, or Island Peak as it is more commonly known, is one of the greatest trekking mountains in the world and offers a superb challenge for those with a lust for adventure.
Itinerary
Days 1-2 Kathmandu
Narrow lanes lead to small squares and courtyards in colourful Kathmandu. Explore the crowded bazaars where stalls and tiny hole-in-the-wall shops sell everything from bangles to Buddhas.Days 3-15 Island Peak
From Lukla, gradually ascend and leave the tree line behind to trek higher and higher into the Himalaya. Stay at teahouses and campsites, getting a taste of cultural Nepal and its spectacular wilderness. Pass monasteries, villages and the odd herd of shaggy yaks. Reach the Island Peak Base Camp and follow the Sherpa through climbing practise sessions in preparation for the final ascent. It's a gruelling ten hours from Base Camp and back but, at a height of 6,183 m, standing atop Island Peak is an exhilarating achievement. Look out over the fourth and fifth highest mountains in the world and celebrate with a grinning group photo.Day 16 Lukla
The final day of trekking is quite leisurely upon the descent to Lukla, concluding this mountain adventure. Slurp a hot cup of chai and rest those aching muscles.Days 17-18 Kathmandu
Back in Kathmandu, enjoy free time for further explorations. Otherwise, have a very long rest or to bag a prime cafe spot and exult over this incredible Himalayan experience.
