Broome to the Bungle Bungles

Discover the untamed beauty of the Australian outback and dive head first into an ancient desert reef on this four-day adventure through the Kimberley. From Broome to the Bungle Bungle region, via the dry and dusty Gibb River Road, we explore the million-year-old rock formations by foot and 4WD. From the curious Bungle Bungle beehives to the dramatic Windjana, Geikie and Cathedral Gorge walls, past the rock paintings in the Tunnel Creek caves and through the palm gardens in the Echidna Chasm, this outback journey into one of the most desolate parts of the earth will be an unforgettable travel experience.

Itinerary

Day 1 Broome/Fitzroy Crossing

Leaving Broome in a cloud of red dust, journey along the rough and ready Gibb River Road, via Derby's Boab Prison Tree. With a girth of 14m, the hollow trunk reputedly housed prisoners en route to the jail. Entering the Napier Ranges, explore the remnants of the region's ancient reef system. Spot harmless freshwater crocs sunbathing at Windjana Gorge, and hunt for authentic bush tucker. Explore Tunnel Creek's cave systems then cool off in a waterhole. Camp by the remote Fitzroy River.

Days 2-3 Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungle)

Travel through the gold rush town of Halls Creek to see the China Wall, a unique quartz vein rising metres off the ground. Wander the orange and black striped 'beehives' of the Bungle Bungle Ranges, geological oddities formed over 20 million years. Explore the ranges by foot or opt for a scenic flight over the area. Relax by the campfire and sleep under the stars. Wake with the birds and visit Echidna Chasm: sloping cliff faces enclosing clusters of towering Livistonia palm trees. Walk a little further to Cathedral Gorge and stroll through shady caverns and pocked chasms, ending the afternoon with a dip under a waterfall. Celebrate the last night in Purnululu National Park with a campfire feast under the Outback sky.

Day 4 Geikie Gorge/Broome

Travelling westward, return to the Fitzroy River for a picnic lunch in Geikie Gorge. A park ranger heads a cruise through the gorge, taking in the majestic cliff faces from the water. Look out for crocodiles, birds and fish and soak up the last of the outback air before winding up back in Broome.
