Kenya (MAD) Project - 42 days

Join a group of like-minded volunteers to experience and contribute to daily life in a rural village. This 42 day project focuses on primary education. Schools are, over-crowded and lack proper facilities as there is no government funding to add new classrooms putting the burden on the community and parents. Split your time between a building project and teaching at a local school. Working alongside local builders, staying in the community and spending time with the kids, you'll become an essential part of the community. Take part in a unique experience where you can really make a difference to a Kenyan community.

Itinerary

Day 1 Nairobi/Rural Project

Meet with your group for the first time in Nairobi before heading to the Rift Valley where your village is based. Catch glimpses of your first African wildlife along the way as you pass by zebras and baboons. Arriving at the village you'll be greeted by community representatives and shown around your simple accommodation.

Day 2 Village

Take a walk around the village to see the school, meet some of the people you'll be working with and get a feel for the town. Make sure to take photos of the building site - it won't look like this for long!

Days 3-13 Teaching and Building

Your days will soon be in a rhythm as you split your time between building, teaching and playing with the kids. You'll also have the opportunity to explore in the afternoon - there's plenty to see along the Rift Valley and in the nearby town of Gilgil.

Days 14-27 Cultural Development

You'll have plenty of opportunity for other activities. Have a chat to community members to find out how you can help. It might be starting adult English classes, helping to weed, painting a mural or showing the local kids the finer points of football. There's also plenty of time to learn more about the Kikuyu and Maasai tribes and their way of life. As time progresses you'll really feel a part of the community.

Days 28-41 Local Expert

In your final weeks you will well and truly become a part of the community. Visit the families of those you've worked alongside, exchange songs and stories and really enjoy the work that goes into teaching and building.

Day 42 Nairobi

Your Kenyan project sadly comes to an end. Admire the hard work you've put into the building, say goodbye to the kids and celebrate your new friendships with your team members and the community. Return to Nairobi.
