Kenya (MAD) Project - 28 days
Join a group of like-minded volunteers to experience and contribute to daily life in a rural village. This 28 day project focuses on primary education. Schools are, over-crowded and lack proper facilities as there is no government funding to add new classrooms putting the burden on the community and parents. Split your time between a building project and teaching at a local school. Working alongside local builders, staying in the community and spending time with the kids, you'll become an essential part of the community. Take part in a unique experience where you can really make a difference to a Kenyan community.
Itinerary
Day 1 Nairobi/Rural Project
Your adventure begins in Kenya's capital, Nairobi. Meet with your group for the first time before heading out to your village in the Rift Valley, just outside of Gilgil. Your accommodation for the next 4 weeks is basic shared accommodation in a local home. Light is more likely come from paraffin lamps than light bulbs and showers are more likely to come from a bucket than a shower head!Day 2 Village
Take an optional tour of the school and village to meet some of the people you'll be working with and get a feel for the town. Make sure to take photos of the building site - it won't look like this for long!Days 3-13 Teaching and Building
Your days will soon be in a rhythm as you split your time between building, teaching and playing with the kids. Each day there's the opportunity to explore your surrounds. Head to Gilgil for a look around the shops, wander the plains or find your own plateau to enjoy views over the valley.Days 14-27 Cultural Development
You'll have plenty of opportunity for other activities. Start side projects with the community like teaching English, helping to weed, painting a mural or showing the local kids the finer points of football. There's also plenty of time to learn some of the local language. Take time out to learn how to make chapattis, a favourite staple of the Kenyan diet. As time progresses you'll really feel a part of the community.Day 28 Nairobi
Sadly, it's time to return to Nairobi. Celebrate a fantastic project with a sense of pride in your building and teaching work and new found friendships, with your team and community that will last long past your time in Kenya.
