Unknown Europe

Who knows what you'll discover on this amazing 29-day journey through the mysterious landscapes of central Europe. See how the Romans, ancient Greeks, Orthodox Christians, Ottoman Turks and the bloody Yugoslavian wars have all shaped the lands and cities. Hike to a remote monastery, marvel at lost Roman ruins only recently discovered and ancient bridges rebuilt after war, and laze on gorgeous beaches along the Adriatic coast. By the adventure's end, this entrancing region of Europe definitely won't be unknown any more.

Itinerary

Days 1-2 Budapest

This voyage of discovery begins on the banks of the Danube River. Cross Budapest's Chain Bridge for a stunning view over the city's beautiful castles.

Days 3-4 Novi Sad

The resilience of this Serbian city is marvellous to behold. Ravaged many times over the centuries, it has been repeatedly rebuilt. For even more of a buzz, take to the vineyards to taste local wines.

Days 5-6 Belgrade

This ancient city showcases centuries of European civilisation, yet maintains a very modern energy. Wander down the graceful old boulevards or rub shoulders with locals in hip nightclubs.

Days 7-9 Sarajevo/Mostar

Bosnia-Herzegovina's capital is surrounded by green countryside and lovely hot springs. Take a day trip to Mostar to marvel at how the town's famous bridge has come back to life after being completely destroyed during the Yugoslav wars.

Day 10 Ostrog Monastery

At the end of a rocky mountain path is this simple monastery where a humble night is spent with pilgrims.

Days 11-12 Budva

The Montenegrin Miami is known for its pristine coastline and vibrant nightlife. Hit the beach this afternoon to soak up some sun.

Day 13 Kotor

Hop aboard a boat bound for a World Heritage-listed, perfectly preserved medieval town with charming crooked alleyways to explore.

Days 14-16 Dubrovnik

Walk along the famous city walls for panoramas of the Adriatic Sea or climb Mt Srd for an aerial perspective.

Day 17 Ulcinj

Enjoy long, sandy beaches and sparkling seas in Montenegro's southernmost city. Wallow on the reputedly healing sands of Velika Plaza - if nothing else, the relaxation will certainly do wonders.

Days 18-19 Tirana

Albania's compact capital is best explored on foot. Turkish and Italian influences are apparent in the city's architecture and the exquisite Et'hem Bey Mosque is a must-see for its intricate frescoes.

Days 20-21 Berat

Thought to be one of Albania's oldest towns, the City of a Thousand Windows boasts an incredible concentration of historical buildings including a magnificent fortress, medieval citadel and mosque.

Days 22-23 Gjirokastra

Wander this perfectly preserved Ottoman town, famous for its textiles and white cheeses. Perhaps even unwind in its 17th century Turkish baths.

Days 24-25 Saranda

Mediterranean-flavoured Saranda is the gateway to the beautiful Albanian Riviera. Travel out of town to Butrint and explore the Roman ruins that were preserved beneath dense vegetation until their recent discovery. Stop by the Blue Eye Spring, which absolutely lives up to its name.

Days 26-27 Corfu

Sickle-shaped Corfu is the perfect introduction to the idyllic coastline and ancient culture of Greece. Maybe stroll along the elegant Liston or visit the Archaeological Museum.

Days 28-29 Athens

The journey ends in Greece's sprawling 3,000-year-old metropolis, recently refreshed by hosting the 2004 Olympic Games. Make sure to sample scrumptious Greek cuisine and visit the Parthenon for a wonderful panorama of the city.
