Aswan Sightseeing
Slow the pace in chilled-out Aswan, once the Nubian gateway between Egypt and tropical Africa. Spend a relaxing day exploring this southern city with a local guide. Wander the temple of Isis at Philae and see the mighty Aswan High Dam, whose construction in the 1960s forced the painstaking reassembly of Philae further up the Nile's banks. Witness the vast granite Unfinished Obelisk and cruise the Nile by felucca to Elephantine Island. Ride a camel to a Nubian village and finish the excursion with a traditional Nubian meal with a local family.
Itinerary
Day 1 Aswan
Start this leisurely day of exploration at the temple of the goddess Isis at Philae, which was painstakingly moved and reassembled after the construction of Aswan High Dam flooded its original island location. Marvel at the mighty dam itself, which created enormous Lake Nasser, and see why fussy Egyptian stonemasons abandoned the Unfinished Obelisk. In the afternoon, hop aboard a traditional felucca and cruise down the Nile to Elephantine Island, so named because it was a hotspot for the Nubian ivory trade in ancient times. Ride a camel to a village and enjoy a traditional Nubian meal with a local family while learning about their time-honoured culture. After the meal, the day's adventure ends.
