Cancun to Antigua

Itinerary

Day 1 Cancun

Cancun is unlike any other place in Mexico and has long been a haven for sun-worshippers and spring-breakers. Laze on its powdery white beaches, swim in the warm waters or simply relax at a bar with a margarita.

Day 2 Chichen Itza/Merida

Visit the 2,000-year-old Maya pyramids of Chichen Itza, a fusion of religion, architecture and science. In the Yucatan capital, Merida, wander through museums and plazas, relax in outdoor cafes or discover weird and wonderful wares on sale at the markets.

Days 3-4 Palenque

Admire temple walls sculpted with images of gods, rulers and ceremonies on a stroll around these ruins. Discover Pakal's elaborate sarcophagus, featuring the richest offering of jade ever seen in the Maya world. Later, perhaps opt to cool off at the Agua Azul and Misol-Ha waterfalls.

Days 5-6 San Cristobal de las Casas

Enjoy the cooler climate at San Cristobal de las Casas, a city rich with local culture. Relax in leafy Plaza 31 de Marzo and take in the town's unhurried highland atmosphere.

Day 7 Lake Atitlan/Panajachel

Surrounded by volcanoes and colourful villages, the view from the shores of Lake Atitlan is spectacular. Enjoy Panajachel's range of optional outdoor activities, from hiking, swimming and surfing to kayaking and paragliding.

Day 8 San Jorge La Laguna

Make local friends, practice Spanish and share a meal on a homestay in San Jorge.

Days 9-10 Chichicastenango/Antigua

Stop by the famous highland village market at Chichicastenango to pick up some souvenirs before travelling to on to colourful Antigua. Celebrate the end of this Central American adventure at a quaint restaurant.
