November 4, 2008 will go down in the history as the day that Barack Obama was elected to be the USA's first black president. With roots in Kogelo, Kenya, Obama's heritage runs thick through this once little-known farming region. Over eight days, journey through the magnificent landscapes of Kenya, taking in amazing sights and superb natural wonders. See Lake Nakuru blush amid a flurry of flamingos, explore the Obama's hometown with a close relative and gaze over the Masai Mara plains dotted with iconic animals. Itinerary
Day 1 Nairobi
At an altitude of 1,700 m, Nairobi is the continent's highest capital city. Those who arrive early are encouraged to browse the collection at the Gallery of Contemporary East African Art, which provides a thought-provoking insight into modern Africa.Days 2-3 Lake Nakuru
Head west to Lake Nakuru National Park in the heart of the Rift Valley. The lake is justly famous for its visiting flocks of flamingos, pelicans and cormorants, but land animals are well represented also. Rare Rothschild's giraffes and both black and white rhinos all flourish within the park's boundaries.Days 4-5 Kisumu/Kogelo (Obama family visit)
Journey west through the tea plantations of Kericho and onwards to Kisumu, by the shores of Lake Victoria. After the long journey, wind down by exploring the colourful markets in this bustling town. Next day, travel to Kogelo, the birthplace of Barack Obama Senior. Guided by a relative of the Obamas, explore the village and discover this family's roots with a visit the Obama household. Later, take a short walk to Nyangoma to call in at Senator Obama High School, stopping by local farms along the way. Experience local hospitality and sample traditional cuisine when the community prepares a hearty lunch - a great opportunity to chat to the locals and hear how this once little-known area is now an important part of world history.Days 6-7 Masai Mara National Reserve
One of Africa's most famous reserves, the Masai Mara is a landscape of undulating plains and riverine woodland. The vegetation sustains buffaloes, gazelles and myriad other herbivores. In turn, these well-fed creatures are prey for black-maned lions, leopards, cheetahs and other stealthy predators. Drive out at dusk or dawn to try and catch these great cats and other wildlife in action. For a truly unforgettable experience, opt to take a balloon ride over this unique landscape and observe a stunning sunrise from up high.Day 8 Nairobi
