Cycle Greece

Follow the path of Helen of Troy, as you cycle some of the world's oldest trails. Retrace Hellas history as you jump off the beaten track and take dirt tracks and quiet country roads to explore mythical Corinth, Mycenae, Nafplion and Epidavros.

Itinerary

Day 1 Corinth

Arrive in Corinth rail station no later the 4 PM. A G.A.P Adventures representative will meet you at the arrival exit and transfer the group to our joining point hotel. There are no planned activities, so check into to the hotel and enjoy the city. In the late afternoon (approx 6pm) a briefing session with your G.A.P tour leader will take place in the common area of the hotel. This is to go over the details of your trip; this is also when your leader will collect your local payment. Check with the leader upon pick up for the exact time and location of this group meeting. After the meeting head out for a meal in a nearby local restaurant (optional).

Day 2 Corinth (B)

Estimated Biking Distance: 30kmsThe ruins of ancient Corinth are spread out at the foot of the huge rock of Acrocorinth and we spend the day cycling amongst the plentiful Hellenic and Roman sites of area. For those looking for a challenge it is possible to bike up to the very summit of Acrocorinth at 1,500 feet to visit the walled city and enjoy some spectacular views over the Gulf of Corinth.

Day 3 Mycenae (B)

Estimated Biking Distance: 60kmsLeaving Corinth, cycle south through little villages which slowly give way to countryside full of orange and citrus groves. This is the land of Helen of Troy, as told by Homer, at a time of the Trojan wars, before the written word was penned. We take the scenic original route through the mountains to the citadel of Mycenae. Biking trails date back over 3,000 years, passing Roman baths, forgotten watchtowers and Mycenaean burial chambers. This is the second longest day on the bike. Approx distance 65 kilometers. Bags will be transferred to the next hotel via our support vehicle.

Day 4 Mycenae (B)

Free day to spend as you wish and an opportunity to spend a full day visiting the site of the magnificent Mycenae. It is best to rise early before the tourist buses arrive and after a hearty breakfast, cycle to this splendid site.Built 600 years before the Acropolis of Athens, enter through the lion gate and explore the ruins of royal tombs and the treasury of Atreus, where beautiful gold artifacts were unearthed and are now displayed at the museum. For those looking for some real excitement on the mountain bike, there will be a chance to enjoy some great mountain terrain, as you strike off on your own in the mountains surrounding the citadel.

Day 5 Nafplion (B)

Estimated Biking Distance: 40kmsVenture by bike to Tirins a city even older than Mycenae. The fortress palace of Tirins dates back to 1,200 BC, when the Acropolis was destroyed by fire. It was believed that the massive walls of Tirins, and the biggest boulders weigh in at 13 tons each, were built by the Cyclops, huge super human one eyed men!!We jump back on our bike and wheel our way to the cobbled streets of neo-classic Napflion, with its wooden balconies, cascading flowers and a well deserved glass of wine at dinner in one of the charming waterfront taverns. For the action men and woman in the group there is a chance to climb all 999 steps to the 13th century Venetian fortress of Palamidi.

Day 6 Nafplion (B)

Estimated Biking Distance: 60kmsLast day and its our longest ride!! Cycle from Napflion to the 3rd century BC theater of Epidavros, though vineyards and past Olive groves. On a hill side overlooking the sea, we arrive at the best preserved ancient theater of Greece, enjoying some spectacular sea views along the way. Built of limestone, the theater can seat 12,000 spectators and ancient tragedies are still performed in the theater today. The acoustics are so perfect that one can hear a coin drop in the last row.

Day 7 Depart Nafplion (B)

Departure transfer will be at 11 am back to Corinth train station. Or if you are wanting to go direct to the airport there is an air-conditioned bus every hour from Nafplion to Athens (duration approx 2 hours). Cost approx 10EUR.
