Itinerary
Days 1-2: USA or Canada/Arusha, Tanzania
Arusha Coffee Lodge Depart by overnight flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport in Arusha, and transfer to your lodge. Situated on a working coffee plantation, its raised, private chalets with log fireplaces and large balconies overlook Mount Meru and the grounds.
Days 3-4: Arusha/Tarangire National Park
Swala Camp Wing your way to Tarangire National Park, where you spend the next two days at the spacious Swala Camp tents, built on raised decks under a canopy of acacia trees. Embark on an afternoon game drive, looking for large herds of eland, oryx, wildebeest and zebra, along with a sizable elephant population. The parkÂ’s terrain ranges from swamps to open grasslands and acacia parkland. The Tarangire River runs through the landscape, providing thirsty animals with a year-round supply of water. Birdwatching is exceptional in the parkÂ’s diverse habitats, too, so look for bateleur and martial eagle. You may venture on a walking safari (seasonal) with a specially trained guide. You may also visit a primary school or a beekeeping project that allows villagers to sustain themselves by collecting and selling honey. Gather your first evening for a welcome cocktail and dinner.
Day 5: Tarangire National Park/Ngorongoro Crater
Exclusive Mobile Tented Camp Fly to Lake Manyara and continue by road to quaint Gibb’s Farm, where you stop for a fresh lunch. Proceed to the natural amphitheater of Ngorongoro Crater, created by the collapse of an ancient volcano. Within resides a fascinating microcosm of East African wildlife, from buffalo to flamingo, lion to leopard. Climb its outer wall, passing through dense vegetation until a breathtaking view across the crater floor appears. Arrive at an exclusive, private mobile camp — located on the rim of the crater — featuring luxury accommodations adorned with mosquito nets, hand-woven rugs, comfortable twin or king-size beds with crisp linens and en suite bathrooms with flush toilets, showers and hot water. On the veranda, director’s chairs provide a place to survey the surroundings. A personal tent attendant brings hot water bottles on chilly nights, as the sounds of the African bush surround.
Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater
Exclusive Mobile Tented Camp Today, drive down into the Ngorongoro Crater, one of AfricaÂ’s most fascinating wildlife areas. Avoid the hustle and bustle of assigned picnic sites with a private, hot gourmet lunch. This afternoon, visit with an elder at a Maasai village, and witness a private dance performance by villagers at your tented camp.
Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater/Serengeti National Park
Kusini Camp Board a flight to Serengeti National Park, the largest and most fabled in Tanzania. As the southern part of a vast expanse of plains shared with Kenya, this area has one of the largest concentrations of wildlife in the world. Look for antelope, hyena, leopard, giraffe, lion, buffalo and cheetah. Each year, the Serengeti is the scene of the spectacular Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra. As the vibrant sun sets, sip sundowner cocktails on a kopje (rocky, island-like outcrop).
Day 8: Serengeti National Park
Kusini Camp Set out on morning and afternoon game drives in the protected Serengeti refuge, where flowing rivers support a variety of birds, mammals and reptiles. Additionally, you may help identify and track cheetah for the Serengeti Cheetah Project; afterward, a lecture reveals startling results from the last 30 years of research. This evening, join fellow travellers for a memorable farewell dinner.
Day 9: Serengeti National Park/Arusha/USA or Canada
