Explore rural Australian towns and the stunning national parks that surround them on this jam-packed jaunt from Melbourne to Adelaide. Drive along the Great Ocean Road to discover rainforests, dramatic coastlines and unique flora and fauna. Hit mountain trails in the idyllic Grampians, learn to throw a boomerang, enjoy a barbecue under a sea of stars and challenge new friends to a game of beach cricket. Cross the border to indulge in some of the nation's best wines before winding up in the stately capital of Adelaide.

Itinerary

Day 1 Melbourne/Great Ocean Road/Apollo Bay

Arrive early to enjoy all the culinary delights of the foodies' mecca, Melbourne, then embark on one of the world's greatest drives along the Great Ocean Road. Stop off at Bells Beach for a cuppa with the locals. Continue through the Great Otway National Park and arrive in Apollo Bay. Be lucky and perhaps spot some magnificent southern right whales from the Great Ocean Walk (seasonal). Take a dip in the sea, play a spot of beach cricket then cap off a memorable day with a barbecue.

Days 2-3 Grampians National Park

Have cameras ready on a visit to the impressive Twelve Apostles. Make a pit stop at a 30,000-year-old volcano, then continue to the Grampians. Arrive in time for an orientation before heading out on a night walk to spot nocturnal critters. Fall asleep in a swag under a galaxy of stars. Rise with the sun the next day and cycle to the Brambuk Aboriginal Cultural Centre. Learn about the local Aboriginal people, the Gariwerd, and be taught to throw a boomerang. Spend more time exploring by bicycle before enjoying a free afternoon. Perhaps take this chance to visit the Pinnacle Lookout.

Day 4 Adelaide

Head across the vast plains of the mighty Wimmera, dropping in at the small community of Murtoa along the way. Stop off at Mt Arapiles, renowned for its rock climbing, and enjoy brilliant views from its summit. Be on the lookout here for the resident peregrine falcons. Cross the South Australian border, make a pit stop at a local winery for a tasting, then finish this road trip in Adelaide.
