Itinerary
Day 1 Darwin/Katherine
Leave the tropics of Darwin and journey south to the tiny township of Adelaide River. Stop off for a dip in the cooling pools at Edith Falls before making tracks to Katherine Gorge. Here there's the choice to join a two-hour cruise through this spectacular region or, for the energetic, there's the option to paddle along Katherine River in a canoe. End up at historic Springvale Homestead for a night under the stars.
Day 2 Kununurra
Cross the WA border and head to Lake Argyle for a cruise along its scenic waters. There's much wildlife here, including crocs, so be sure to bring the camera. With an appetite built up, it's time to partake in a quintessential Aussie experience, a sausage sizzle barbecue lunch. If time permits, perhaps cool off with a swim before heading back to set up camp.
Days 3-4 El Questro
Stop in at the Zebra Rock Gallery which showcases arts and crafts from the East Kimberley region. Grab a bite to eat before continuing on to one of the world's largest unspoilt frontiers, El Questro. Wake up the following morning with a soothing soak in the thermal pools at Zebedee Springs and then head off to explore more gorges.
Days 5-6 Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungle Ranges)
Marvel at impressive landforms 20 million years in the making at the Bungle Bungle Ranges. Explore these amazing striped rock domes and spend time wandering through Cathedral Gorge and Echidna Chasm. Perhaps choose an optional scenic flight for an unforgettable perspective on this timeless land.
Day 7 Fitzroy Crossing
Hit the Northern Highway heading towards Halls Creek and on to Fitzroy Crossing, a true outback town that will be home for the night.
Day 8 Windjana Gorge
Journey into Geikie Gorge and see multi-coloured rock cliffs. Look out for fresh-water crocodiles, birds, dingoes and wallabies. Enjoy a wet and dark underground walk at Tunnel Creek and spend the night among the sheer cliffs of the spectacular Windjana Gorge.
Day 9 Broome
Discover a grim history at the infamous Boab Prison Tree, once used as a temporary prison for the local outlaws. The journey ends on arrival into Broome. With its romantic pearling history, turquoise waters, red sandstone cliffs and atmospheric Chinatown, its well worth staying on in Broome for a few more days.
