Trek back in time on the trails of the ancient Khmer on a journey through Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. This exciting adventure presents the very best that the region has to offer including the awe-inspiring ruins of Angkor, vibrant cities, remote villages and mighty waterways. Cruise the khlongs in Bangkok, chill out by the river in Vang Vieng, hire bikes to take in Dong Khone Island and chow down on a fried spider en route to Phnom Penh - colour, culture and adventure, this trip has it all.
Itinerary
Days 1-2 Bangkok
Take to the khlongs in a longtail for a great introduction to Bangkok. Visit the reclining Buddha at the city's oldest temple, Wat Pho, then take an overnight train to Nong Khai.
Days 3-4 Vientiane
Cross the mighty Mekong and travel to the Laotian capital. Scour the morning market for souvenirs, wander the gilded Pha That Luang or simply kick back with a Beerlao in a riverside restaurant.
Days 5-6 Vang Vieng
Travel north from the capital to the sleepy backpacker mecca of Vang Vieng. Chill out riverside or get out and explore the stunning limestone karst surroundings.
Days 7-9 Luang Prabang
Peruse the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre then hop into a jumbo, Laos' version of a tuk-tuk, and head to the fabulous Kuang Si Falls for an invigorating afternoon dip.
Day 10 Pakse
Fly to the sleepy southern town of Paske. Gain an insight into the lives of the local Alak and Katu tribespeople while travelling through villages in the Bolaven Plateau.
Days 11-12 Si Phan Don
Hire a bike to explore the island, famous for its cultivation of coconut, bamboo and kapok or take a walk to the beautiful Li Phi Falls.
Day 13 Homestay
Visit a silk weaving centre that provides jobs for women in the Stung Treng province en route to Kratie. Get a taste of rural island life during a homestay with a local family in Koh Trong.
Days 14-15 Phnom Penh
Try fried spiders in Skuon on the way to Phnom Penh. In the capital, visit S-21 before a sobering visit to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek.
Days 16-19 Siem Reap/Angkor Wat
Discover elaborate temples and awe-inspiring architecture. A visit to the mysterious Ta Prohm is a must, as is seeing a remarkable Angkor sunset.
