This was the trip that started it all for Intrepid, and it remains one of our most popular. Northern Thailand is among the greatest adventure destinations on the planet and this journey shows why - hiking among the hilltribes, sailing on the rivers and calling in to the friendly and colourful villages. Come along and see why this has become the benchmark for all our other journeys.
Day 1 Bangkok
Get among the energy of Thailand's exciting capital, Bangkok. Travel around the city sights in a tuk-tuk, stroll down famous Khao San Road, stop to slurp a fiery Thai curry or check out the lively bar scene. Bangkok is Asia's very own city that never sleeps and one that knows how to have fun.
Days 2-4 Kanchanaburi/River Kwai
Swap Bangkok's busy streets for its lively waterways and take a longtail boat cruise down the Chao Phraya River before seeing all 46 metres of the tremendous reclining Buddha at Wat Pho. Hit the road bound for Kanchanaburi, home to the historically significant Bridge on the River Kwai. Visit Jeath War Museum and head out of town to swim beneath the seven-tiered waterfall at Erawan National Park. There's even a chance to kayak back to Kanchanaburi, paddling under the infamous Death Railway Bridge.
Day 5 Ayuthaya
Ayuthaya, the ancient capital of Siam, is home to many beautiful, intricately carved temples. Wat Phra Mahathat is a highlight, while fortunes are revealed at Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon. Enjoy them both on a guided tour before boarding an overnight train to Chiang Mai.
Days 6-7 Chiang Mai
Free time in this northern cultural centre means being spoilt for choice with things to do. Chiang Mai boasts dozens of spas and yoga studios, plus a famous Night Bazaar packed with brightly-coloured buys. Hone culinary skills at a Thai cooking class before hailing a songthaew to the temple complex of Doi Suthep for memorable views of Chiang Mai and surrounds. Chiang Mai is also known for being a popular destination to celebrate the annual Songkran festival, held every year to celebrate the traditional new year.
Day 8 Doi Mae Salong/Elephant Camp
Ride through the jungle on an elephant and explore the caves at Chiang Dao en route to the rural town of Doi Mae Salong.
Day 9 Homestay
Head to a small Thai village to stay in the home of some local friends. There's plenty of time to experience the quiet village life before sampling a traditional northern Thai Kantohk dinner.
Days 10-11 Hilltribe Trek
Hike through remote villages and discover diverse hilltribe cultures. Stay in simple huts and trek through rural terrain, past lush rice terraces carved into the hills.
Day 12 Chiang Rai
Stop by colourful Mae Sai on the way to the border junction between Thailand, Laos and Myanmar.
Day 13 Chiang Mai
Why not enjoy a traditional Thai massage before an overnight train to Bangkok.
Days 14-15 Bangkok
Back in Bangkok, get lost while meandering through the extensive Chatuchak Weekend Market or soak up the sights and sounds of vibrant Chinatown. Mark the end of this Beautiful Thailand tour by collecting a swag of mementos!
